Street Food & Market Tour
About 2 hours
The Street Food and Market Tour lasts about 2 hours. It begins at with a bowl of your choice of a delicious, fragrant crab and rice noodle soup called bun rieu cua, pho ga (the chicken version of Vietnam's iconic beef noodle soup, pho bo) or Hanoi's famous smoky grilled pork and noodle dish, bun cha.
During the meal, I will tell you about some of Vietnam's culinary customs, traditions and range of cuisines. After the soup is finished, we take a short walk to a large and bustling local market. As we wander through the market, I will explain some of the more exotic ingredients and answer any questions people may have. Along the way there is the opportunity to try some different sweetmeats and snacks.
"looks ugly, tastes beautiful!"
We then move to another section of the market, where there is more snacking to be done! A range of fresh nem (spring rolls) is available as well as Vietnam's famous green papaya salad. There are also drinks available: fresh seasonal juices and delicious nuoc xao (ugly fruit juice - looks ugly, tastes beautiful!). We then move to the che stand. Che is a very popular 'dessert in a glass'; everyone gets to build their own from a range of ingredients.
To finish, we return to the Old Quarter for a coffee at the 'Secret Caf&', an oasis of peace high above the crowds and noise of the city: a chance for you to kick back and absorb one of the most fabulous views of central Hanoi. Try the Sabayon Coffee, once found all over the capital, this is one of the few cafes that still serves this delicacy. While we are there, I'll answer any questions you may have about where to shop, what to see, how to fill the rest of your time - anything really!
