Mai Chau Tour: Food of the White Thai

Overnight Stay

Meet for lunch and enjoy your choice of a delicious, fragrant crab and rice noodle soup called bun rieu cua, pho ga (the chicken version of Vietnam's iconic beef noodle soup, pho bo) or Hanoi's famous smoky grilled pork and noodle dish, bun cha. We then head to Mai Chau, a beautiful valley set amongst limestone karsts, just a three and a half hour drive from Hanoi.

Mai Chau is home to the White Thai people of Vietnam, distantly related to tribes in Thailand, Laos and China. Once we arrive at our stilt house, we'll jump aboard some motorbikes for a spin through the gorgeous countryside.

We will spend the night with a White Thai family in a traditional stilt house. The sleeping quarters are communal, with sleeping on pads on a bamboo floor, white sheets and mosquito nets. The accommodation is basic but comfortable with flushing toilets, hot water showers and electric fans.

Mr Duc's family has been in the valley for generations and are very hospitable. His wife cooks wonderful food, noticeably different from the majority Kinh cuisine of northern Vietnam. We try a wide selection of dishes over dinner, have a light breakfast of sticky rice and fruit and then enjoy a different range of dishes - equally delicious! - for lunch the next day. In the morning, there will be time to wander through the village and check out some of the local activities, purchase some handcrafts or just wander through the rice paddies, soaking up the atmosphere.
